The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers 29 programs leading to P-12 certification. Those programs are housed in six colleges and two schools and all are accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education. The Council on Teacher Education does not admit candidates to certification programs. For information on admission requirements and procedures, undergraduates should contact the office of the college that houses the program. Graduate students should contact the department that houses the program.
State law requires that all applicants to teacher certification programs pass the Illinois Certification Testing System test of Basic Skills prior to admission. Many of our graduate programs also require passing of the content test in the major teaching field prior to admission.
Applicants are advised that certain felony convictions, enumerated in Articles 10-21.9 and 21-23a of the School Code of Illinois prohibit certification or employment in public schools. All cnadidates for certification throough the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are required to undergo a criminal background check prior to their first field experience. Questions pertianing to this matter should be addressed to the Certification Officer.
